Jake looked around at the close circle of faces. Some he recognized, many he didn’t. Erick, looking aloof and unsurprised, Salvatore, looking worried, and Brand, facing him and looking absolutely pissed-off, before he covered it with a bland expression.

“You’re not welcome here,” Brand said, and his mellifluous voice sounded off, too: forced and unnatural.

Jake didn’t bother to hide his own anger. “Yeah? This is a free festival, jerk. And you’re the one who’s not welcome here, you and your friends. What the hell, you think you can just start asking for protection money from business owners now? You think you’re what, the Mafia?”

“That is no affair of yours,” Brand replied, still in that fake calm voice. “But let me explain something to you: we are in the security business. We protect people, their homes and their stores. That doesn’t come free.”

Jake rolled his eyes. “Yeah, thanks for the explanation, Godfather. If you were legit, you wouldn’t be threatening people. You’d just send an invoice like a normal person.” He looked around the circle again, searching for that one face, though he was pretty sure it wouldn’t be there.

It wasn’t. Conrad wasn’t hanging out with the Reds, not today. Whatever they were planning, it didn’t involve him. Jake blew out a breath, relieved. Of course he isn’t involved, the less-paranoid part of his brain grumbled, but he couldn’t help himself.

Brand stepped forward, chest and chin up, making himself look big. “Leave,” he told Jake. “Now.”

Jake didn’t move a muscle. “Not until you apologize for beating up on my friend, here.” A threatening murmur ran around the circle.

Garcia elbowed him in the ribs and muttered, “Jake. This isn’t looking good.”

Jake gave him a tight nod. He was well aware of that, but he wasn’t going to back down.

“Perhaps you had better leave,” Erick said suddenly. His voice was soft, but it carried easily across the crowd, and Jake could almost see everyone’s ears pricking up.

Garcia reacted as if Erick was speaking to him alone. His shoulders bunched as if he wanted to fight, wanted to protest, but he didn’t. Instead, he ducked away, out from under Jake’s arm, and began to move back the way they’d come. He wasn’t walking steadily or fast, but he was walking.

Jake stared after him, nonplussed. “Hey!” he called, but Garcia didn’t look back.

“It’s best that way,” Erick told him in his soft, strangely mesmerizing voice. “This is not something you should let your friend see.”

Jake shook his head, refusing to let Erick work his magic on him. “Why not?”

“A werewolf meeting, even in broad daylight, isn’t meant to be gatecrashed,” Erick told him. “And Brand doesn’t appreciate it when others try to muscle in on his turf. It makes him…uneasy.”

Another murmur ran round the circle, but this one sounded different. Angry, confused, uncertain. There were layers and ripples of undertones in Erick’s statement that Jake could barely hear, but he could see the effect it was having.

Clearly Jake had arrived in the middle of something, some upheaval among the Reds.
